An autumn of musical treats in Salzburg

Combine culture and relaxation with a stay at the GROSSARLER HOF this autumn
The streets of Salzburg will be filled with the sound of music this autumn as the city plays host to a series of musical and cultural events and festivals. Whether you’re a classical, folk or jazz fan, you’ll find something to suit you. Salzburg is also celebrating 20 years on the UNESCO World Heritage List with a series of events running throughout the year. And with the GROSSARLER HOF hotel less than an hour away from the city, it’s the perfect spot to combine your cultural adventures with a luxurious escape to the mountains, where you can soak up the magnificent views, relax in the spa and feast on Tyrolean food.

Take The A-Train: 14–17 September 2017
The autumn’s first musical event is a jazz festival with a difference. Take The A-Train brings performers from across Europe to Salzburg as part of the Trans-Europa-Express. Musicians will step off the train at Salzburg station and embark on a journey into the colourful world of jazz. Over 40 performances take place in 20 venues centred around the station, featuring quirky locations such as a vintage trolleybus and an emergency shelter. The festival even stretches beyond the city limits to Lokwelt Freilassing, just across the border in Germany.

The Rupertikirtag Fair: 20–24 September 2017
Held every year since 1976, the Rupertikirtag folk fair is a chance to ‘Don your best folk outfits and join the bustling crowds in the heart of the city’. It’s a favourite with locals and tourists alike, with plenty of music, dancing, food and beer, all held in honour of Saint Rupert. Freshly tapped beer will be provided by Stiegl, Austria’s largest private brewery, who are celebrating their 525th anniversary this year. There will also be spit-roast ox, an arts and crafts market, vintage fairground rides and musical performances on the open-air stage.

Salzburg Culture Days: 9–22 October 2017
Salzburg Culture Days is one of the highlights of autumn in the city. This year it celebrates 70 years of the Salzburg Cultural Association. Over the years, the Association has grown into the biggest concert organiser worldwide, relative to the size of the city. This year their partner the Mozarteum Orchestra will be performing under new head conductor Riccardo Minasi, using a programme of concerts which was first performed back in 1952. There are a mix of events, with a big anniversary concert held on 11 October as well as orchestral performances and a special ‘Soul meets Classic’ event.

Jazz & The City: 25–29 October 2017
The autumn season ends with a bang at the 17th annual Jazz & The City festival. Over five days there will be over 100 concerts taking place across the city, featuring 300 jazz musicians from across Austria and around the world. Among the big names taking part in this year’s festival are Bugge Wesseltoft, Shayna Steele and Nik Bärtsch’s Ronin. The venues are spread across Salzburg’s historic district and include everything from churches and cinemas to theatres and restaurants.
