Family fun by the ton

As life goes on longer and the older get fitter, family holidays are becoming a three generation affair. The Alpine mountains, valleys and lakes deliver fun by the ton for every age group, and a family holiday to tell your grandchildren about, only they were there too. Biking, hiking, fishing and watersports are a given – the region is less famous for its enchanted forests, flying foxes and holistic health farms. These six distinctive Niche Destinations offer a full gamut of family-friendly Alpine accommodation, from classic mountain hut to 5-star destination spa resort:

Angerer Alm: the authentic mountain refuge – Tyrol/Austria

Among St Johann in Tyrol’s high pastures and beneath the summit of the Kitzbüheler Horn (1,996m), the Angerer Alm is the epitome of a classic mountain hut. Long walks and bike rides are a joy in the surrounding forest and flower-filled meadows. A few minutes’ walk away, the Hornpark is the largest adventure forest in the Kitzbühel Alps, with a flying fox (zipwire), woodland playground, leisure lake and treetop trails to keep children occupied for hours. Back at the Angerer Alm, creative cuisine and a fabulous 6,000 bottle cellar are prime attractions. Cosy rooms, bunks or four posters, breathtaking views from the balcony, farm animals, fresh air and invigorating exercise all add up to a memorable family holiday.

Let the hotel owner and her family team of eight entertain you with guided mountain biking, fishing and hiking trips – a visit to the Alpine adventure park and petting zoo, and a tour of the mine on which the village once depended are also on the agenda. Youngsters burn off excess energy in the playroom and enchanted forest with its climbing frame, slides and swings, while the adults enjoy relaxing hours in the hotel’s exquisite Spa Minera: designed above and below the surface, this is a splendid tribute to the region’s mining traditions.
