MIGRAINES: TREATING THE HEAD FROM THE GUT

TACKLING MIGRAINES AT THE PARK IGLS MAYR CLINIC

What connects Salvador Dali, Richard Wagner and Marie Curie? All of them suffered from migraines. This painful condition affects 10% of the world’s population, with women around three times more likely to suffer than men. Migraines are more than just a regular headache. Symptoms are varied and can include nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to noise and light as well as pulsating, throbbing or one-sided headaches.

Dr Richard Kogelnig, Deputy Medical Director at the Park Igls Mayr clinic, is trained in neural therapy, manual medicine and acupuncture. He uses this combination of skills to treat migraine sufferers. He explains that the causes of migraines are still not fully understood: ‘The latest scientific findings associate them with inflammation in the brain linked to irritation of cranial nerves, such as the optical nerve or the vagus nerve – the tenth cranial nerve and largest in the parasympathetic nervous system.’

Triggers for migraines can include foods rich in histamine, serotonin and tyramine such as shellfish, strawberries, bananas, cheese and chocolate. Overloading the senses with too much screen time, flashing lights, loud music or strong smells can also bring on a migraine. As can high stress, a lack of sleep and female hormones before and during menstruation.

Studies have shown that migraines are linked to changes in the intestine, referred to as leaky gut. This allows toxic substances from the intestine to enter the circulatory system in the brain. At Park Igls Mayr clinic, Modern Mayr Medicine treats the root cause of migraines through a combination of treatments. A detox programme and probiotic treatment help clear toxic substances and optimise intestinal flora. Acupuncture helps tackle the symptoms. Combining the different approaches increases their effectiveness and can also help improve many other health issues.
