CHRISTMAS MARKETS TO SUIT EVERYONE
Christmas market lovers are spoilt for choice in Innsbruck, with six magnificent markets to choose from. The city’s oldest and largest market takes place beneath the Golden Roof, the crowning glory of the old town. Among colourful medieval buildings, Austrian Turmbläser (brass brands) play traditional Christmas music and the market’s 70 stalls sell a host of treasures, from woolen goods and woodcarvings to Christmas decorations and tasty local specialities – don’t miss a piping hot ‘Kiachln’, a doughnut laced with Sauerkraut. Head to the observation deck for wonderful views of the old town in its holiday finery, and meet fairytale figures and storytellers in its cobbled lanes.
For the best views of a wintery Innsbruck, take the funicular railway to Hungerburg, where the city’s highest Christmas market awaits. Soak up panoramic views across the historic city below and the spectacular mountain peaks beyond, before warming up with a hot mug of punch and browsing stalls for Christmas gifts and decorations. Or experience festive fun for all the family at the Family Christmas Market at Marktplatz, which sparkles with the thousands of Swarovski crystals which decorate its stunning 14-metre Christmas tree. Watch the children’s eyes light up as they soak up the magic, with puppet theatres, storytellers, a petting zoo and carousels to delight all ages.
The Christmas Market Maria-Theresien Strasse lines Innsbruck’s main shopping street with trees covered in tiny, sparkling lights and fills it with stalls selling modern and traditional Christmas gifts. Or why not head away from the crowds and discover the enchanting markets at Wiltener Platzl Square and St Nikolaus district. Their streets are transformed into artistic wonderlands, with stalls full of handicrafts and warming local delicacies. Whether you visit one market or all six, Innsbruck’s festive and authentic Christmas experience is one you’ll never forget.
